Old Sow is the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere, located off the southwestern shore of Deer Island, New Brunswick, Canada, and off the northeast shore of Moose Island (part of Shackford Head State Park, the principal island of Eastport, Maine.
Tidal currents coming together between Eastport and Deer Island, N.B., form the "Old Sow" whirlpool - one of the world's largest and most dangerous. The whirlpool has tipped over a tanker, chewed many smaller craft to bits.
It's at its best two hours before flood tide, drive down near Dog Island in Eastport to see it.
GETTING THERE: 44.9102,-66.9846 Depending on the tides, one can view the Old Sow Whirlpool at the head of Dog Island at the tip of Eastport. The Deer Isle Ferry also passes through it.
